Many women keep busy right up until they go to bed, only to feel they've had no time for themselves and struggle to fall asleep. If that sounds like you, you're not alone, and it is understandable if you want to finish the chores before facing them again the next day.
Small changes, however, can make a big difference to your evening, especially if you can get help with the dinner dishes and other jobs, to create a little extra time for you. Whether or not you can get assistance with the things you want to get done, the first step is to actually give yourself permission to take time out for yourself. It’s normal to read in the evenings or do an activity you enjoy. It’s not normal to feel guilty about it and believe you must clear more work emails or be on your feet right up until bedtime.
Below are some habits that make your evening a little more considered and calmer. The good news is that calm doesn’t require a retreat in Tuscany (although we’d all like to go there!). Often, it’s built from small rituals that take only a few minutes but quietly improve the rhythm of a day or set it up for a good night’s sleep. And you don’t need to do all of them. Making one change that feels right for you is a great step to becoming the calmer person you want to be!
1. A Journal by the Bed
Writing in a journal is one of the easiest ways to slow your thoughts down at night. A few lines about the day, a list for tomorrow, or even letting your pen flow freely, emptying your head onto the page. It’s not about writing beautifully. It’s about getting things out of your mind and onto paper. This ritual is perfect for those whose mind starts running through tomorrow’s to-do list the moment their head hits the pillow.
2. Tea for one
There’s something grounding about making a proper cup of tea and actually sitting down to drink it. Not having it on the run, but sitting in a favourite chair, and taking 5 or ten minutes for yourself. It sounds simple, but it’s remarkable how rarely we do it. Drinking a sleepy-time or relaxing tea an hour before bed, perhaps while reading a book, is a great way to slow yourself down.
3. Candles or aromatherapy in the evening
Lighting a candle in the evening is one of the simplest ways to signal that the day is coming to an end. There’s something quietly soothing about sitting with a gentle flame flickering nearby, whether you’re sipping a cuppa, reading a book, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment.
If you love a fragrance, you can opt for a scented candle or aromatherapy oils. A few drops in a diffuser or oil burner are usually enough to fill a room with fragrance. Lavender is lovely before bed, eucalyptus feels fresh and clearing, and sandalwood tends to create a warmer, calmer atmosphere.
4. Gentle Stretching Before Bed
A few minutes of stretching before bed can make an enormous difference to how your body feels. Nothing complicated, just loosening your shoulders, back and legs after a long day. Try a gentle cobra, puppy pose, and cat cow flow.
It’s the kind of habit that feels unnecessary until you start doing it regularly, and then you wonder how you managed without it. A simple yoga mat or soft floor mat makes it more comfortable and encourages you to actually take those five minutes.
5. Reading
Few things calm the mind or stop overthinking as effectively as reading, particularly when the lighting is soft (but targeted onto your page), and the house has settled for the night.
A comfortable chair, a warm lamp, with a candle flickering next to you, a cosy throw, and a good novel can turn an ordinary evening into something you genuinely look forward to.
Choose to take some time for yourself before bedtime. Turn off screens and dim the lights an hour (or start with 30 minutes!) before bed and try one or more of the small rituals above. It will not only make you feel good but will also set you up for a better night's sleep.
