7 Steps to Creating a Calm Kitchen

A calm kitchen is about how you feel in the space. For some women, life may still be full of family responsibilities. For others, it may be quieter at home. The kitchen is a place where you want to feel relaxed, enjoy making the next meal, have a quiet cup of tea, or spend time with others without feeling stressed.

These seven steps are designed to help you create a kitchen that feels clear and supportive, without overwhelm.

1. Clear What You Don’t Use

Calm begins with space. Start by removing anything you no longer use or need. This might include duplicate utensils, unused gadgets, or chipped items you’ve held onto “just in case.” You don’t need to do it all at once—one drawer or cupboard at a time is enough.

A good question to ask: Do I use this regularly, or does it add unintentional stress?

2. Simplify Your Surfaces

Benchtops set the tone of your kitchen. Aim to keep only a few essential or meaningful items out, like a kettle, a wooden board, a bowl of fruit, a plant, or vase of flowers. When surfaces are clear, your mind has fewer visual cues to process, which naturally creates a sense of calm.

Choose a “home” for everything else so it’s easy to put away.

3. Create Zones

A calm kitchen works with you, not against you. You can group items by purpose, for example, cooking, cleaning, storing, making a hot drink, breakfast foods etc. Keep everyday items within easy reach and less-used items further away. This helps keep your movements more natural.

For example, keep tea, mugs, and a kettle together to create a simple tea-making space.

4. Soften the Atmosphere

Small sensory changes can shift the entire feeling of a space. Consider softer lighting in the evening, such as a lamp instead of overhead lights. Natural elements, like a small plant, a wooden utensil holder, or a linen tea towel, can bring warmth without clutter.

Even scent plays a role. A subtle fragrance, such as citrus or lavender, can gently signal calm. Burning a candle when cooking brings natural calm.

5. Choose Fewer, Better Items

A calmer, elevated kitchen doesn’t need more, it needs intention. If you’re replacing or adding items, opt for quality over quantity. A well-made pan, a favourite mug, or a reliable knife can make everyday tasks feel smoother and more enjoyable.

You don’t need a full set of everything. Just what works well for you.

6. Introduce Simple Daily Resets

Calm is easier to maintain than to recreate. At the end of the day, take a few minutes to reset your kitchen. Clear the bench, wash or stack dishes, and return items to their place. This doesn’t need to be perfect, just enough to create a sense of order for the next morning.

Think of it as a small act of care for your future self.

7. Make Space for Quiet Moments

A calm kitchen is not just functional. It can also be restorative. Create a small ritual you enjoy. This might be your morning coffee in a favourite cup, a few quiet minutes with tea in the afternoon, or preparing a simple meal without rushing.

These moments don’t need to be long. What matters is that they feel intentional.

Bringing It Together

A calm kitchen is created gradually, through small, steady changes. You don’t need to follow every step at once. Start where you are and let the space evolve in a way that feels supportive to you.

Over time, you may notice that your kitchen becomes less of a place of pressure and more of a place to pause, prepare, and enjoy a quiet moment or good company!
